Swim Team & Programs

Nine competitive training groups, five pool locations, and everything you need to get in the water with Phoenix.

Training Groups

Nine groups, one pipeline

Our competitive team is split into nine groups by skill, experience, commitment and age. All placements are made after a scheduled tryout.

Stroke Development I & II

Entry · 9&U / 10&O

Our entry-level instructional group. Practices run 45 minutes, up to 6 days a week (attend at least 2). Must swim 25 yds freestyle unassisted and float/backstroke for safety. Swimmers compete in select meets that fit their level.

  • Learn all 4 competitive strokes legally
  • Efficient turns, push-offs, dives & backstroke starts
  • Swim a 100 IM in competition without a DQ

High School Prep

13 & Over

For older athletes who want to improve without a year-round commitment — before a HS season, for lifeguard prep, or alongside other sports. Six 30–45 min practices weekly (attend at least 2). No meets or mandatory volunteer hours.

  • Improve endurance & aerobic capacity
  • Refine all four strokes, dives & turns
  • Grow a lifelong love of the sport

Bronze

Age Group

Graduates of Stroke Development training more frequently — 5 practices offered weekly (attend at least 3), 45–90 minutes. Athletes attend all PAC home meets plus their highest championship, and begin training with snorkels.

  • Improve starts, turns & finishes
  • Streamline & dolphin kick off every wall
  • Complete a 200 IM in a meet

Silver

Age Group

The transition to a more competitive mindset. 5 practices weekly (attend at least 4), averaging 75 minutes, introducing paddles and pull buoys. Athletes chase Metro Silver Championships and Junior Mets cuts.

  • Pace aerobic sets like 6×100 free
  • Complete a 100 fly in a meet
  • Strive for Junior Met qualifying times

Gold

Age Group

Experienced athletes with several years of training. 5 practices weekly averaging 90 minutes — attend all when possible. Finger paddles and drag socks are introduced. Swimmers target Junior Mets finals and team points.

  • Learn the crossover turn
  • Make sets like 10×100 free on 1:40
  • 80%+ practice attendance for the season

Platinum

12&U + developing 13–14s

For athletes who can train at a very high level and are transitioning toward the Senior program. 6 days a week, 90–120 minutes, 85%+ attendance expected. Athletes make Junior Mets cuts and work toward Zones and beyond.

  • Complete a 200 fly, 400 IM & 1000 free
  • Achieve USA Swimming BB times minimum
  • Qualify for Age Group Eastern Zones

Senior 2

Entry Senior · HS age

The entry-level Senior group for skilled but developing athletes. 85%+ attendance, 105–120 min daily. Swimmers learn nutrition, sleep, mental focus and the habits of successful athletes until they reach Senior Met standards.

  • Handle increased training volume
  • Skills performed at championship standard
  • Qualify for Senior Mets each season

Senior 1 & Senior Elite

Top Tier

Our highest-performing athletes, training together for a full-time commitment to the sport. The regimen is designed by Head Coach Don Wagner, guiding swimmers toward Junior Nationals and top college programs. Entry requires multiple Senior Metro standards or a Sectional cut.

  • 90% training attendance
  • Final at Senior Mets; qualify for Sectionals, Futures, Juniors & Senior Nationals
  • Be proactive about college recruiting

Book a Tryout

Join Phoenix

Interested in joining? A tryout takes about 15–20 minutes and helps us get to know your swimmer and find the group that fits their age and level. If your swimmer already has a USA Swimming ID from another team, you can enjoy a free 1-week trial after your evaluation.

Fall tryouts

Tryouts are currently closed for the season. Interested in trying out for the fall? Fill out the form below — we look forward to seeing you in August!

Apparel & Equipment

Gear up

All swimmers wear the team uniform at PAC meets; team caps are worn at practice and meets (silver caps for finalists). PAC provides team T-shirts and one team cap.

Team Store — D&J Sports

D&J Sports manages all PAC team equipment and Speedo apparel, ordered through the Phoenix team portal. Questions on orders? Contact Coach Ryan Wagner. You may order different brands/styles — just clear it with your coach first.

Volunteers

It takes a team family

Swimming is labor-intensive, and PAC relies on parent support to run home meets. Every swim-team family signs up to volunteer — it keeps our meets running and our fees low.

Home Meets

Timing, officiating, hospitality, computer, runners, clerk of course, concessions — and more.

Away Meets

Timing and officiating help travels with the team.

Community Events

Planning, preparing & purchasing food, serving, set-up and clean-up.

How it works

Each family completes a set number of hours based on their swimmer's group (highest group applies for multiple swimmers). Jobs are posted on each event page — click the "Job Sign-Up" button and follow the instructions. All volunteers must check in at the Volunteer Table so hours are credited. Hours post within 2–3 weeks; check them via My Account → Service Hours and email the office with any corrections.

Volunteering is a great way to get involved, get to know the community, and keep swim-team fees low. See the required hours by group.
